OAU Gears Up for 2023 West African Universities Games

Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) in Ile-Ife is brimming with excitement as it prepares to host the upcoming West African Universities Games (WAUG) in 2023. Abiodun Olanrewaju, the institution’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), confidently stated in a recent announcement, “The 2023 WAUG is slated to kick off on December 16.”

More than just a sporting event, WAUG promises an impressive fusion of learning, innovation, and vibrant West African culture, all woven into a grand historical tapestry. Known also as the ECOWAS Students Games, WAUG brings together student-athletes from across the region to compete in various sporting disciplines.

WAUG boasts a rich history, dating back to its inaugural event in 1965, held in Ibadan, Nigeria. Since 1989, the games have been held roughly every four to six years, fostering camaraderie and athletic excellence among West African universities. The games originated from a 1964 conference of West African universities in Ibadan, showcasing the enduring commitment to regional collaboration and student development.

Nigerian students are eager to participate in this prestigious event, which traditionally takes place every four years. The last edition, held at the University of Port Harcourt in November 2018, witnessed enthusiastic competition and remarkable displays of athletic talent.

“Sport contingents from universities across the West African sub-region will vie for medals in a diverse range of sports, including tennis, table tennis, basketball, athletics, and many more,” enthused Olanrewaju.

He further revealed, “Adding to the excitement, the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, will grace the opening and closing ceremonies as the special guest of honor. The closing ceremony will conclude the games on December 22.”

With preparations in full swing, Obafemi Awolowo University is poised to deliver a memorable and successful 2023 WAUG, celebrating the spirit of sportsmanship, cultural exchange, and regional unity.
