To begin with, Islam teaches that the safest path for a Muslim is strict adherence to the guidance of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger. It was reported that Abū Bakr al-Siddīq (RA) declared that he would never abandon anything that the Messenger of Allah practiced during his lifetime.
These wordings capture the essence of the Muslim way of life: following the Prophet in belief, worship, and conduct.
Whoever holds firmly to this path will not go astray, for Allah has promised guidance and protection to the true believers who remain steadfast.
Shaytān, however, constantly seeks to divert people from this straight path through various means. One of his most powerful tools is the temptation of women (fitnah), particularly. Among these trials is the mishap of attraction between men and women. Islam does not degrade women; rather, it recognizes their powerful influence in shaping families and societies.
Allah warns us against the dark influence of Shaytān in the Qur’an. In Sūrat As-Zukhruf (43:36), Allah states that whoever turns away from the remembrance of the Most Merciful will be assigned a devil as a companion (qarīn).
This verse clearly highlights a basic truth: distance from Allah creates closeness to Shaytān. When one’s īmān weakens, Shaytān gains control; when the remembrance of Allah is strong, from time to time, Shaytān is defeated.
Also, history enlightens us that many generations have collapsed due to unhealthy desires and moral vices. When guided by faith, women are a source of strength and stability, but when Shaytān exploits them from the angle of temptation, families and communities suffer.
Another group frequently targeted by Shaytān are people of eloquence and love—people whose words and personalities affect others. Shaytān seeks to corrupt their intentions, inflate their egos, or lead them into excess. For this reason, discipline and humility should be virtues of believing Muslims.
Things to Lay Hold of About Shayṭān and His Ploys
Shaytān is with us at all times. His presence is from town to town, even beyond where we can imagine. A woman must maintain a high level of self-discipline. Women are advised not to ruin themselves because of worldly merriments.
As a Muslim, a strong determination to worship Allah must be intact at all times. Shaytān goes after those who do not listen to naṣīḥah (admonition). Whoever leaves the remembrance of Allah becomes like an animal, susceptible to a myriad of ungodly influences or attacks, having broken away from the herd.
Shaytān targets two sets of people. The first are those who listen to the whispers of Shaytān. A brief example is what happened to some of the Sahābah who ran away from the Battle of Uḥud during the lifetime of the Prophet. It is evident that they heard the whispering of Shaytān and followed it.
Allah says in the Qur’an:
Indeed, those of you who turned back on the day the two armies met, it was Shayṭān who caused them to slip because of some of what they had earned… (Qur’an 3:155)
The second are those who do not go beyond the level of the whispering of Shayṭān. They do not submit to his teachings. These are the servants of Allah on the earth. These two categories clarify that there are people who do not delay in responding to the whispers of Shayṭān—they are comfortable with it—while others find it difficult and resist it.
Conclusion
When Shayṭān comes for you, he usually aims at your ʿaqīdah (creed and core beliefs), muʿāmalah (social dealings and interactions), and ʿibādah (acts of worship).
He wants you to disagree with the creed of Allah and question His authority, challenging every rule. One of the things he uses in this regard is the opposite gender, music, lyrical poems, and confusion.
Therefore, to be free from the chains of Shaytān and his aides, a Muslim is advised to hold firmly to the following:
Ikhlās(sincerity in worship)
Remembrance of Allah at all times
Hastening to observe Sawm (fasting)
Keeping the company of pious friends.
May grant us unfaltering Imān and also save us from Shaytān and his deadly tricks.
